Quarterly fee disclosures

About eftpos data

The tables below show aggregate eftpos data for the quarter ending 30 September 2026. The total amounts reflect the scale and mix of transaction values and volumes processed by eftpos during the quarter.

Interchange fees and scheme fees are one component of the cost of accepting card payments for an individual business. The amount ultimately paid by an individual business also depends on factors including its payment provider, transaction mix, routing arrangements and commercial agreement.

Understanding this quarter's data

As Australia’s domestic debit card network, eftpos plays an important role in supporting competition and choice, helping put downward pressure on the cost of accepting payments. eftpos interchange, scheme fees and rebates work together to support a simple and competitive pricing model, while enabling continued investment in the network to keep pace with the way everyone in Australia pays – including through product enhancements, new functionality and digital payments security.

The average eftpos interchange was 2.8 cents per transaction during the quarter, reflecting the mix of transactions across different interchange categories, including a material share of transactions from small businesses eligible for lower interchange rates.

For issuers, the average eftpos scheme fee was 4.3 cents per transaction during the quarter (4.1 cents for card-present and 5.2 cents for card-not-present transactions). For acquirers, the average eftpos scheme fee was 2.2 cents per transaction (1.9 cents for card-present and 3.7 cents for card-not-present transactions). The higher rates for card-not-present transactions reflect the additional fraud, security and technology requirements associated with payments where the card is not physically present.

Rebates form part of the overall economics of the eftpos network, and are used to incentivise investment into Australia’s domestic debit card network and least-cost routing. Taking into account rebates, the net average eftpos scheme fee for issuers falls to 2.4 cents per transaction, and for acquirers to 1.9 cents. Interchange, scheme fees and rebates therefore need to be considered together to understand the overall economics of the eftpos network, rather than any individual fee being viewed in isolation.
