Move to NPP
The NPP was launched in 2018 as Australia’s fast-payments infrastructure, enabling real-time payments between Australian financial institutions, businesses and individuals. The NPP supports fast, data-rich, secure payments and is foundational to modernising Australia’s payments landscape.
Today, more than one-third of account-to-account payments are processed using the NPP, with real-time payments increasingly adopted by consumers, businesses and government. AP+ and industry are working to move remaining payments to the NPP ahead of the proposed decommissioning of Australia’s legacy payments infrastructure.
As the operator of the NPP, AP+ has an extensive program of work underway to ensure the NPP has the capability, capacity, reach and resilience to easily handle large volumes of transactions in real-time.

Move to NPP program updates
Public consultation
To help shape the future direction of account-to-account payments in Australia, AP+ sought feedback from end users and stakeholders through two public consultations:
The future vision for account-to-account payments
with the support of the RBA and Treasury, this consultation collected feedback on the current and future payment needs and expectations of the users of Australia’s account-to-account payments systems.
Future NPP capabilities and enhancements
this consultation collected input on the key capabilities and improvements needed in the future for the NPP to support end user needs.
A2A Payments Roundtable updates
The Account-to-Account Payments Roundtable is a series of roundtables being held between AusPayNet, AP+, the RBA and Commonwealth Treasury. These roundtables will help shape a shared vision for the future of account-to-account payments in Australia and define high-level deliverables and milestones for achieving that vision, including clear prioritisation and sequencing. Members of BECS and the NPP as well as other relevant stakeholders, including key end-user groups and any operators of alternative payment systems, will be engaged through the roundtable process. The roundtable process is being conducted under the authorisation granted by the ACCC (with conditions) on 1 August 2025. The first session was held on 5 September 2025, with subsequent sessions expected to follow every four to six weeks over the next six months.
